Message From Our Director

Living with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) may be one of the most challenging obstacles that you will face in your lifetime. Historically, there has been a lack of health education, advocacy and resources for people in low income communities where CKD is most prevalent. Evidence suggests there is a direct correlation between high rates of CKD and communities that do not have access to the proper care and health resources.

As healthcare professionals, we have to do a better job of promoting health education, improving better access to care and social conditions in order to stem the pipeline of individuals who develop CKD. You can take the first step to better kidney health by making routine visits to the doctor, checking your blood pressure and blood sugar levels, urine protein to ensure your kidneys are functioning properly.

We are proud to partner with the American Renal Associates, a leader in kidney dialysis treatment and care. With their backing, our focus is on creating an environment that supports high-quality patient services, patient care and  comfort that delivers the best possible dialysis treatment.

Dr. Constance Mere is the medical director for the Howard University Chronic Kidney Disease Program. She also oversees the Howard University Dialysis Center, which is a leader in kidney health education and clinical dialysis care for people living with CKD in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area.

Sincerely,

Dr. Constance Mere, Medical Director

Patient Testimonials

"I am proof that living with chronic kidney disease doesn't have to be a death sentence. I was diagnosed with CKD back in 2016 and I thought my days of leading a normal life were over. Then, I met the team at the Howard University Dialysis Center. They were able to put me on a care plan back to health, which provided me with a new beginning. I am grateful to be here alive and well five years later thriving. Thank you again."

Shelby J., Mount Rainer, Md.

"You can tell they really care about their patients. I am happy to report that I am on the road to a better health outcome. A special thanks goes out to Dr. Mere and the HU dialysis team for all of their efforts to help dialysis patients live better lives."

Leslie T., Woodley Park, D.C.

I was born with a rare form of reflux and at the age of 16, my kidneys started to fail. Years later, when I moved to this area from Philadelphia, a friend of mine helped me research local dialysis centers after a recommendation from my physician to start dialysis treatments. I was truly impressed by the level of care, attention to detail and kindness from the staff at Howard University. I've been on dialysis for a little over two years and my treatments have a restored my faith and my hope."

Maurice P., River Terrace, D.C.

"I have been on kidney dialysis for the past 20 years. This has been a challenging and daunting journey that I do not wish on anyone. But I have accepted it and handled it with my head held high. I used to believe that all dialysis centers were the same. That's before I became a patient at the Howard University Dialysis Center. The atmosphere is conducive to healing and promoting better health. The staff is attentive and professional at all time. You get the feeling that they care about their patients. I just wish I would have found about you a lot sooner."
