How to Join Us

(When you are ready to discuss volunteering call (202) 865-1470—the Office of Volunteer Services—to set up an interview to match your skills and interests with current hospital needs. No experience is necessary. Training will be provided. After being accepted as a volunteer, you will receive general orientation, a free tuberculosis screening, infection control training and specific training for their assignment

Volunteering your time at the Howard University Hospital means becoming part of one of the best hospitals in the United States.

Volunteering at HUH also means making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Our team contributes an invaluable part of the care that we provide. A variety of activities is available to you as a volunteer. Some involve direct contact with patients; others involve working with families and visitors, while still others occur behind the scenes. While performing this much valued community service you will make new friends, learn new skills, and enjoy other benefits, but perhaps the greatest reward of all is personal satisfaction.

The Mission

  • To support hospital staff in providing the ultimate in health care services to the customer
  • To introduce prospective health care workers to health careers through observation in the clinical and allied health areas and/or service to the customers
  • To provide the Metropolitan community the opportunity to participate in hospital programs
  • To serve as liaison between the volunteer community and the administration
  • To recruit multi-cultural volunteers
  • To ensure that all volunteers are recognized for the services rendered

Requirements

A committed willingness to serve

  • Volunteers work a minimum of 100 hours (3 hours per week, between the hours of 8:00A.M. and 8:00 PM., Monday through Sunday)
  • Attend volunteer orientation/interview
  • Get a physical examination
  • Volunteers must provide a notarized parental/guardian letter of consent to participate
  • You must wear a designated uniform and identification badge
