The residency training program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and meets the requirements of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Our residency has established a reputation as a program of medium size and high quality, which permits our residents for personal growth and builds prospect for professional assignment.
The program offers up to 5 intern year training positions per year for a total of 18 in the four-year curriculum. We do not have fellowship of our own but after graduation most of our residents get fellowship at their desired institutions. See our Past residents sections for details.
Our philosophy revolves around the goal, which is to ensure that our residents are able to perceive the other individual as a whole entity. The department adheres to the basic belief that human beings exist in a complex biological, psychological and social matrix which directly influences their lives. As a result, the Residency Training Program emphasizes comprehensive assessments and individualized treatments for each patient and encourages residents to develop a range of diagnostic possibilities and treatment skills of their every patient in biological, psychological and social perspectives.
In order to adequately prepare our residents and to widen their career opportunity, our program offers teaching sites and patient populations which are diverse therefore ensuring residents to gain a wide range of clinical experience. To meet this goal, the educational experiences are carefully structured to expose residents to varied psychopathology, multiple treatment modalities, and a number of different service delivery systems.
Our residents gain experiences in wide clinical psychiatry such as severe and persistent mental illness, substance use disorders, duel diagnosis, HIV patients with mental illness and substance use disorders, geriatrics, child and adolescent, forensics and trans-cultural psychiatry. Our residents train at a tertiary care academic medical center, a private psychiatric hospital, a Veterans Affairs hospital, a state psychiatric hospital and multiple community and mobile treatment sites.
