Howard University Physician Assistant Program has been in existence since 1974. Howard University Physician Assistant (PA) Department has served as an integral component in the PA educational arena by its unique position of being based at a Historically Black University. Through the decades of PA education the department has served as a leader in providing access for minority students to the profession. The students in turn, have served in underserved populations addressing the needs of underserved communities, one of the founding principles of the profession. Physician Assistants are licensed health care professionals who practice in primary care, ambulatory, emergency, inpatient, outpatient, and long-term care settings. Physician Assistants deliver health care services to diverse patient populations with acute to chronic medical and surgical conditions.

The ARC-PA accepted the plan for Howard University to withdraw from the ARC-PA accreditation process effective July 8, 2016. The program will not accept any new students for enrollment. Specific questions regarding the Program and its plans should be directed to the Program Director and/or the appropriate institutional official(s).
The ARC-PA recognizes that the program has two student cohorts enrolled, the most recent class being accepted in August 2015. The program and institution will be required to teach-out, as defined by the ARC-PA Standards and as required by the regional accreditation body for a program that is closing, the students remaining in the program, which compose the 2017 and 2018 graduating cohorts.
