Endocrinology Services –
Clinical Management of diabetes is provided by a board
certified endocrinologist and endocrinology fellows. The
primary care physician can refer a patient for
evaluation by an endocrinologist. Please refer to the
Endocrinology section of the referral form.

Diabetes
Self-Management Education –
Howard University Hospital Diabetes Self-Management
Program is recognized by the American Diabetes
Association for meeting the national standards for
diabetes education. Group and individual education is
available. Patients with type 1, type 2 or gestational
diabetes may be referred. Patients may also be referred
for selective services such as glucose monitoring
instruction, insulin initiation, insulin pump start and
continuous glucose monitoring.

Medical Nutrition Therapy –
Individual nutritional counseling is provided by our
registered dietician who is certified in diabetes
education. This service helps patients determine their
daily calorie requirements and designs individual meal
plans to help them achieve weight and metabolic goals.

Podiatry –
Patients who are seen by the endocrinologist in the
Diabetes Treatment Center may be referred to our
podiatrist for a foot examination.

Pharmacy Counseling –
Medication counseling is available to patients who are seen in
the Diabetes Treatment Center. Our pharmacy staff will
meet with patients and review their current
medication and make recommendations when needed.

Retinal Screening –
The
Diabetes Treatment Center is equipped with the DigiScope EyeTel Imaging System. This state-of-the-art
telemedicine system allows us to screen for diabetic
retinopathy and prioritize the patients
who need an immediate ophthalmology consultation.

Autonomic Nervous System Screening –
The
Diabetes Treatment Center is equipped with an ANSAR
machine. This machine measures the health
of the autonomic nervous system. This is the part of the
nervous system that controls the heart, lungs,
digestive system, sexual function, pupil diameter
and sweating. Patients who are seen by the endocrinologist
in the Diabetes Treatment Center may be referred for
this testing.
